National Association of Therapeutic Parents (NATP)
We are big supporters of therapeutic services for all children who have experienced traumatic circumstances in their early years. It is often difficult to fully understand what a child has experienced, and what affect their trauma may have had on them. The NATP are a non-profit organisation who specialise in the ‘Support, promotion and advocacy for ALL Therapeutic Parents” including: foster carers, kinship carers, step parents, adopters, special guardians or biological parents whose children need extra nurturing in their parenting. As a very recently established organisation (March ’17), the NATP have already succeeded in welcoming surplus of 300 members and 100 volunteers who are on-hand to provide support in locations across the UK. They support parents and carers.
If you’re unsure as to what Therapeutic Parenting actually means, the NATP describe it in their FAQ’s as a ‘deeply nurturing parenting style’ which focuses on reducing a child’s misconceptions of shame about what they might have experienced by creating new pathways in the child’s brain to help them understand the world around them. The NATP exist to support parents with children who have experienced trauma by providing them with the knowledge, skills and strategies necessary to succeed at helping their children to repel the negative effects of early life abuse/neglect.
If you feel that the NATP can provide a benefit to your family or someone you know, simply Sign Up on their website for a small annual fee dependent on the level of support you require. By doing so, you will have access to specialist resources and availability of your nearest ‘Listening Circle’ where a mentor will help you to overcome the obstacles you may be facing in helping a child overcome trauma, and feel more confident in the process. There are many more benefits of becoming a member including 50% off ‘Inspire Training’ who provide online training courses to boost your Therapeutic journey. To give you an idea of the sort of expertise they provide, here’s a short video created by the Inspire Training Group that explains what Therapeutic Parenting really is: https://youtu.be/Y-oWUZNhEXo As a North East adoption agency we are proud to have our very own Play Therapist, Claire Dale, who has a wealth of experience of supporting children and families within the fostering and adoption field. If you would like to speak to Clare about how she can help, please call the office on 0191 3863719.
